SALES

Harry Bullis, former chairman of the board of General Mills, used to give his salespeople the following advice: “Forget about the sales you hope to make and concentrate on the service you want to render.”
The moment people’s attention is centered on service to others, they become more dynamic, more forceful, and harder to resist.

How can you resist someone who is trying to help you solve a problem?
“I tell our salespeople,” said Bullis, “that if they would start out each morning with the thought, ‘I want to help as many people as possible today,’ instead of ‘I want to make as many sales as possible today,’ they would find a more easy and open approach to their buyers and they would make more sales.
“the person who goes out to help people to a happier and easier way of life is exercising the highest type of salesmanship.”

SELF-DEFENSE

Do not resist.  Immediately hand over your wallet, your watch, your jewelry and anything else the mugger wants. . . . Do not attempt to negotiate for your belongings; the longer you delay the mugger the more impatient, and violent, he is likely to become.  If you are held up in an isolated area, do not scream.  Chances are that no one will hear your cries for help, and they will only enrage—or  perhaps even worse, frighten the mugger.

SILENCE

We need to find God, and he cannot be found in noise and restlessness.  God is the friend of silence.  See how naturetrees, flowers, grassgrows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in
silence . . . we need silence to be able to touch souls.
- Mother Teresa

Learn to get in touch with the silence within yourself, and know that everything in life has purpose.  There are no mistakes, no coincidences, all events are blessings given to us to learn from.

SORROW

In this sad world of ours, sorrow comes to all, and it often comes with bitter agony.  Perfect relief is not possible, except with time.  You cannot now believe that you will ever feel better.  But this is not true.  You are sure to be happy again.  Knowing this, truly believing it, will make you less miserable now.  I have had enough experience to make this statement.
- Abraham Lincoln

SPIRITUALITY

We are not human beings having a spiritual experience.
We are spiritual beings having a human experience.
- Teilhard de Chardin

- Emerson

STRENGTH

Strength and weakness have nothing to do with courage or muscle; only recognition.  Strong people recognize their weaknesses.  They also recognize their ability to overcome those weaknesses.

Weak people deny their weaknesses, and fail to recognize how strong they truly are.
- Carmen Mariano, Educator

Nothing stops the man who desires to achieve.  Every obstacle is simply a course to develop his achievement muscle.  It’s a strengthening of his powers of accomplishment.
- Eric Butterworth, clergyman

Nothing is so strong as gentleness, and nothing is so gentle as true strength.
- Ralph Sockman

Strength does not come from physical capacity.  It comes from an indomitable will.

- Douglas Mac Arthur (1880-1964), general, U.S. Army

STRESS

Steps a Person Can Take to Relieve Stress: Talk it out.  When something worries you, don't bottle it up . . . Escape for a while.   When things go wrong, it helps to escape from the painful problem for a while . . .  Work off your anger.  Do something constructive with the pent-up energy.  Pitch into some physical activity or work it out in tennis or a long walk . . .  Do something for others.  If you feel yourself worrying about yourself all the time, try doing something for somebody else . . .  Take one thing at a time.  Take a few of the most urgent tasks and pitch into them, one at a time, setting aside all the rest for the time being.  Shun the "superman" urge.   No one can be perfect in everything.
- Suggestions from the National Mental Health Association, reported by Dr. Neil Solomon

SUFFERING

We are healed of a suffering only by experiencing it to the full.
- Marcel Proust

A Creed for Those Who Have Suffered

I asked God for strength, that I might achieve.
I was made weak, that I might learn humbly to obey . . .

I asked for health, that I might do great things.
I was given infirmity, that I might do better things . . .

I asked for riches, that I might be happy.
I was given poverty, that I might be wise . . .

I asked for power, that I might have the praise of men.
I was given weakness, that I might feel the need for God . . .

Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered.

I am, among men, most rightly blessed!
- Unknown Confederate Soldier
